#1 Resource for Irish language videos on youtube.
Almost 100 year old recording of an Irish language speaker
Here's a video I edited from of Pádraig de Breit telling the old folk tale of Pilib an Chleite. I tidied up the original audio in audacity applying some noise reduction, as the original audio clip has a lot of background noise.
It was recorded in 1928 in University College Cork by Wilhelm Doegen. The dialect you hear is from Co. Waterford.
Original audio available here: www.doegen.ie/LA_1059d1

Seo Linn ar facebook: seolinnoifigiuil Coláiste Lurgan ar youtube: ua-cam.com/users/tglurgan This is a mirror of the original video hosted by RTE's account. I have re-uploaded here as I'm aware many subscribers on here will not be subscribed to RTE and may miss an opportunity to see this wonderful performance.

Manx isnt a dead language there hasnt been significant changes since 1974 Although we dont have people who speak manx as their only language it doesnt make it dead people who say otherwise havent met manx speakers They speak fluently and with manx accents some are better than others but there are hundreds who speak it and there is a community of them keeping it alive thought i would say this as a manx person Also for those who disagree Im a Clague which is traditional manx surname and my family can trace there ancestors back several generations on the isle of man disagreing with a manx person on manx is bazaar.
Teagaim ar ais ag an bhfideo seo go hiondúil chun éisteacht leis a fháil amach cé mhéad dhe a bhfuil mé in Ann a thiscint. Ní thuigim rud ar bith fós… lol
Irish is my strongest bloodline. I have never been there, but the country and the language still have a place in my heart. It is so sad that the Celtic languages have so few speakers. If I ever move there, I will definitely learn one of them.
And to think that Canada nearly made Irish a recognized 2nd official language because it used to have so many speakers, there. What a different world that could have been.
Lady thatcher has arich accent dutch. taught english by irish people
❤can you buy the island
I live in waterford and
She's so cold about cutting tight with her poor parents. I think she was a narcissist with a mission.
Excellent talker, he has the gift of gab.
Omg mo chroí💔
As a Manx person, I have no idea why it’s such a big deal we speak English and us in the Younger Generation feel more British than Manx
As An American who is of decent It makes me so proud to see so many Irish embracing thier own language
Just say irish speaker, why is monolingual necessary.
I assume it's because most Irish speakers also speak English, so this is perhaps a more authentic sounding version in some sense.
@@MM-du7je That makes no sense, just say irish speaker why is monolingual necessary.
@@siadbarre-u7c he only speaks irish
@@MM-du7je exactly.
@@siadbarre-u7c Exactly what? It's rare enough that it's important to distinguish. Dense on purpose?
Isnt the word "No" english?
Brilliant! I'm appaling at unravelling plots but even before I realized what's going on still a little treasure!
beautiful language 👍🏼🇮🇪☘️
it was so cute when the guy working at the cinema was so happy he got to speak Irish with him 😌
As an American with Irish ancestry learning Irish on an app like Duolingo and UA-cam videos, this has been “sultmhar.” I definitely am not fluent and am very much a beginner, but the fact that I did recognize many words even without looking at the subtitles means that many Irish, if interested, could learn the most basic words if they want to. And Duolingo is free. Granted the app needs some fixes as the pronunciation is not very good at times and it is a struggle when they don’t teach grammar and spelling rules, but I’ve picked up quite a few words.
Erin go bragh🇮🇪💪
The English subtitles for this is AMAZING
Go raibh maith agat. May the language and history continue on! Éire go Brách!
Tá sé mar Nathan Fielder Éireannach
Now I understood why Irish accent sounds so weird in English now, when he spoke Gaelic it sounds so natural.
Is oss mericawdom tá beagan Gaeilge agum
I kinda feel like the only way the Irish will learn their language is to be bullied by the rest of the world for not knowing it 😭
The English chap is Michael Wood who was probably mostly responsible for making of the documentary 'In Search of the Trojan War' from which this clip comes.
Irish language sound beautiful and elegant than English.
The one guy looks like Newman from Seinfeld 😏
Bit off topic, but this series has a great soundtrack
The reporter is cute.
sounds like kurdish
Beg your pardon?
This is very nice. I wish we all still spoke irish fluently 😢 It also makes me think, is there a way to have more people speak irish?
chad
The anger towards him on the faces of by the Irish that couldnt answer him. He got no anger from the non Irish.
I speak Irish fairly well and I can barely understand but a noun and verb here and there he says
dont speak it well enough then. also probably dialectal differences and the pure Gaelic accent
@@MilesianPaul there are toothless mush mouths in every tongue
I wonder what his accent would sound like if he had learned english in his later life.
"Under British rule, Irish was prohibited in schools" nip in the bud - missionary vision Why this isn't a surprise to an Indian like me, a sad tale of every colonised land on this planet. As Trevor Noah says, if there is one country that has no moral right to complain about immigration...... At least the immigration can be classified as legal or illegal. What the English did to others is pure evil.
10:32 that's little alex horne
chomh brónach d'Éirinn
Please, like first episode, all background music in ENGLISH??? You eejit. Not watching any more. I am a blow in,trying to learn irish. And you desregard to most beautiful aspect of irish culture in favour of foreign suite. Hypocrite
Sad about the yankee trash music. Did you never hear any trad? Like irish trad? Or sean nos?
The old man reminds me of my own grandfather who was born in the west of Galway in 1904. He passed away in 2006 at the age of 102. Never spoke a word of English.
so that makes him the last monolingual irish speaker
He did live in the back arse of nowhere so that would explain that lol my old man used to bring me back there during the summer holidays and I’d stay for a month. My grandmother had 5 clocks in the living room where I slept on the couch. The sound of those clocks will haunt me forever. They lived around 8k of the main road, which was actually a dirt road up until the mid 90s.
@@SystemScan101 very fascinating! what was his name do you know?
Like hearing a voice from a world long gone, a lost world.
these are old interviews. My question would be are there any monolingual Irish speakers left?
No, unfortunately. There are still native speakers, but no monolingual Irish language speakers anymore.
Go h'aoibhinn, an blas. ❤An Gaeilge
Labhair i nGaeilge AN CHÉAD CHÉAD i gcónaí. Ná labhair ach Béarla mura bhfuil an duine eile in ann. Tá labhairt na Gaeilge SO COOL. Tá an Béarla bacach.
The English really destroyed everything
Ich bin lööö
This really makes me want to live there and an Ghaidhlig a fhoghlaim. I’ve already got an ainm Gaeilge.
